Morocco Moves Closer to Producing Kamikaze Drone

Morocco has taken a significant step toward launching its first manufacturing line for the “Spy-X” loitering munition drone, as Israeli company BlueBird Aero Systems Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it had hosted a Moroccan technical team for an in-depth technology transfer session.

In an official statement seen by Assahifa, the company said it was “pleased to welcome the Moroccan technical team to our facilities for an intensive learning session on UAV production as part of the Transfer of Technology (TOT) program.”

According to the statement, the visit included “comprehensive knowledge acquisition and hands-on training” in preparation for establishing the first local production facility for the Spy-X drone in Morocco—described by the company as a milestone representing the country’s first domestic manufacturing line of its kind. BlueBird expressed appreciation for “the trust and engagement” shown by its Moroccan partners, noting that it looks forward to “continuing to support them with expertise and innovation.”

The Spy-X drone—classified by the manufacturer as a “loitering munition” or kamikaze drone—is designed to locate, track, and engage targets through a guided explosive strike. It features a lightweight electric platform of roughly 10 kg, an operational range of up to 50 kilometers, endurance of 1.5 to 2 hours, and an attack speed exceeding 250 km/h. The system can carry interchangeable warheads of approximately 2.5 kg for varied target effects.

Intended for tactical use by small field units, the drone is equipped with a tri-sensor suite and an advanced video tracking system that enables target identification and visual confirmation before impact. The company notes that the system offers high accuracy and multiple warhead options tailored to mission needs.

This development follows earlier defense-industry agreements between Rabat and Tel Aviv, reinforcing Morocco’s push to expand its domestic defense manufacturing capabilities and deepen industrial partnerships with leading Israeli firms in the unmanned-systems sector.

In recent years, Morocco has launched a strategic plan to build a local defense industry capable of supplying the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces while developing export potential. This trajectory includes a series of industrial partnerships, most recently the signing—two months ago—of an agreement with India’s Tata company to establish a military-vehicle manufacturing plant in Berrechid.
