Tanger Med Confirms African Leadership After Strong 2025 Performance

The Tanger Med port complex recorded strong growth across most of its activities in 2025, handling a total of 161 million tons of cargo, an increase of 13.3% compared to 2024, according to figures released by the Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA).

Container traffic remained the main driver of performance, with the port’s four container terminals processing 11,106,164 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), up 8.4% year-on-year. TMPA attributed this rise primarily to the commissioning of the latest extension of Terminal TC4, operated by APM Terminals, which boosted handling capacity and operational efficiency.

Truck traffic under the TIR regime reached 535,203 units, marking a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year. The authority said this momentum was largely fueled by higher exports of industrial products (+4.8%) and agri-food goods (+4.3%), underlining the port’s strategic role in supporting Morocco’s export sectors.

Passenger activity also posted notable gains, with 3,220,422 passengers and 895,341 cars transiting through the port in 2025, representing increases of 5.7% and 5% respectively. TMPA highlighted that the annual Marhaba operation was conducted under optimal conditions, supported by new operational measures, particularly the generalized use of fixed tickets introduced in 2025 to better regulate flows in line with fleet capacity and ensure smoother crossings.

In bulk cargo, trends were mixed. Solid bulk traffic totaled 522,493 tons, down 11%, mainly due to a decline in grain imports compared to 2024. In contrast, liquid bulk traffic recorded sustained growth, reaching 8,641,481 tons, an increase of 13% year-on-year.

The port complex’s two vehicle terminals handled 526,862 vehicles in 2025, a 12% decrease compared to the previous year. This volume included 327,569 vehicles exported by Renault plants in Melloussa and SOMACA in Casablanca, 126,874 vehicles exported by the Stellantis plant in Kenitra, and 39,751 vehicles in transshipment. TMPA linked the decline to production adjustments aligned with global demand and the reconfiguration of international automotive flows.

Regarding maritime activity, Tanger Med recorded 16,686 ship calls, down 4.5% from 2024, a decrease mainly explained by developments in the RoPax segment, where smaller vessels were replaced with larger-capacity ships carrying more passengers and freight per trip. At the same time, the port welcomed 1,319 mega-ships exceeding 290 meters in length, up 8.4%, reflecting measures aimed at optimizing port calls, improving operational flows, and enhancing service quality for shipowners.

According to TMPA, the 2025 results illustrate the commitment of the entire port ecosystem, the operational performance of its teams, and the efficiency of its infrastructure, consolidating Tanger Med’s position as a leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean and across Africa, serving both national and international supply chains.
