Morocco Accelerates Drive to Build a Global Video Game Industry

Morocco has launched the second edition of its “Video Game Incubator” programme in the capital, Rabat, targeting 12 Moroccan entrepreneurs working in the video game industry, as the country seeks to strengthen its position in the fast-growing global sector.

The initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication in partnership with the French Embassy in Rabat. It forms part of a joint declaration of intent signed by Morocco and France under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron, aimed at supporting and developing Morocco’s gaming ecosystem.

Speaking at the launch, Youth and Culture Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid said the bilateral partnership seeks to deliver tangible benefits for young people, adding that the video game industry has become a “concrete reality” in Morocco. He noted that the country is gradually positioning itself on the international gaming map, supported by foreign partners and growing engagement from domestic stakeholders.

For his part, French Ambassador to Morocco Christophe Lecourtier said France was proud to support Morocco’s vision for developing the sector. He added that results achieved six months after the declaration of intent demonstrate the effectiveness of policies directed at Moroccan youth. The initiative, he said, offers a new generation of entrepreneurs the opportunity to gain international visibility through the companies they create.

The 12 selected entrepreneurs will benefit from tailored mentoring designed to meet their specific needs, delivered by a specialised French company with the support of international experts. The programme also provides targeted training and access to a strategic network of key industry players.

Participants are expected to showcase their projects at the third edition of the Morocco Gaming Expo, scheduled to take place in Rabat from 20 to 24 May, where they will present their work to industry professionals, investors and the public. The best projects will have the opportunity to exhibit internationally at Gamescom in Germany in late August, opening the door to global markets and potential partnerships with publishers and other industry stakeholders.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to help Moroccan start-ups scale up into small and medium-sized enterprises, with the long-term goal of establishing Morocco as a significant player in the global video game industry.
