Ahead of 2026 UNSC Term, Liberia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

As it prepares to take up its seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2026, the Republic of Liberia has reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.

The position was voiced on Friday in Rabat by Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, during a press briefing following her meeting with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

"Morocco's territorial integrity is a matter of principle for Liberia," Nyanti said, adding that the Sahara region is an integral part of the Kingdom. She emphasized that Liberia will carry this stance into its upcoming tenure on the UN Security Council, contributing to discussions with a clear and consistent position.

The Liberian top diplomat reaffirmed her country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as “the only credible, serious and realistic solution” to the regional dispute.

As a future member of the Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, Liberia’s reiterated commitment is seen as a significant boost for Morocco's diplomatic efforts at the UN, particularly amid growing international consensus around its proposed solution.

Minister Nyanti also praised the leadership of King Mohammed VI, noting that the momentum Morocco has generated around the autonomy initiative has encouraged a positive shift in global opinion on the Sahara issue.

“Liberia welcomes the dynamic driven by His Majesty the King, and we recognize the widespread support that is growing in favor of Morocco’s position,” she stated.
