Belgium on Monday reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as “the most adequate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for reaching a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Western Sahara, while also signaling concrete diplomatic and economic steps aligned with that position.
The stance was expressed by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot, following talks in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Prévot underscored that Belgium’s position is consistent with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025, and recognizes what he described as the existential importance of the Sahara issue for the Kingdom of Morocco, firmly situating the region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
Beyond the political message, the Belgian foreign minister indicated that Brussels intends to translate its position into action at both diplomatic and economic levels, stressing that Belgium’s approach remains aligned with international law.
In a move with clear economic implications, Prévot announced that Belgium’s ambassador in Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Western Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives. These include facilitating visits by Belgian companies and organizing trade fairs in coordination with the region’s three development agencies.
