At the 22nd meeting on the rights of persons with disabilities, held as part of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council, Morocco took center stage in reaffirming its unwavering commitment to equality and inclusion.
Speaking before the assembly, the Moroccan representative underscored the country’s dedication to upholding the principles of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, thirty years after its adoption. While significant progress has been made, she highlighted that full participation and autonomy remain a challenge, particularly for women and girls with disabilities.
A National Priority Enshrined in the Constitution
The Moroccan representative emphasized that the country’s Constitution guarantees equality among all citizens and firmly rejects all forms of discrimination, while also providing specific protections for persons with disabilities.
To translate this commitment into concrete action, Morocco has implemented several institutional mechanisms, including the National Mechanism for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, overseen by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH). This initiative serves as a key pillar in safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring their full participation in society.
A Bold National Program for Women’s Economic Empowerment.
In an effort to break down economic barriers, Morocco has launched the National Program for the Economic Empowerment of Women, with a horizon set for 2030. This initiative is designed to facilitate access to education, vocational training, and employment, giving women—particularly those with disabilities—greater financial independence and opportunities for self-sufficiency.
Tailored Support for Women Victims of Violence
Recognizing the disproportionate challenges faced by women with disabilities, Morocco has also established specialized units within courts, as well as reception and legal assistance centers, aimed at providing tailored support to women victims of violence. These centers ensure that vulnerable women receive the legal protection, psychological support, and social services they need to reclaim their dignity and independence.
A Call for Enhanced International Cooperation
Beyond its national initiatives, Morocco called for stronger international cooperation to ensure that the inclusion of women and girls with disabilities becomes a global reality rather than an aspirational goal. The Moroccan representative stressed that gender equality and disability rights are shared responsibilities, urging the international community to step up its collective efforts.
With this intervention, Morocco once again positions itself as a leader in human rights advocacy, demonstrating that inclusion is not just a principle—it is a national priority backed by concrete reforms. As the world moves forward in the fight for equal rights, the Moroccan approach serves as a compelling example of how policy, legal frameworks, and social programs can work together to drive meaningful change.
