Morocco Seeks to Accelerate Water Projects to Address Shortages

Morocco's Equipment and Water Minister Nizar Baraka on Friday called on the directors of water basin agencies to devise an action plan to deliver the water projects that will be implemented by the High Guidelines contained in the Throne Day Speech.

In a meeting at the General Directorate of Water Engineering in Rabat, Baraka urged all parties concerned to pool their efforts to carry out these projects, the Equipment and Water Ministry said in a press release.

These projects include the completion of the construction program for large dams and the acceleration of their implementation in line with new priorities, as well as water transfer projects between Laou, Loukkos, Sebou and Oum Er-Rbia basins to the Al Massira dam.

The Minister also called on the different stakeholders to quickly implement the projects that provide for interconnecting dams in order to enable integrated and fluid management of water resources at the level of basins, stressing the importance of devising an integrated program for the construction of seawater desalination plants, in collaboration with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and all stakeholders.

He also called for increasing the volume of treated wastewater by 2030 and encouraging the agriculture, industry and tourism sectors to use them, in coordination with the Interior Ministry.
