Morocco to announce decision on legal use of Cannabis on Thursday

The Moroccan Government Council will convene Thursday under the chairmanship of Head of Government Saad Dine El Otmani to follow the examination of the bill on the legal use of cannabis, said Monday a statement by the Department of the Head of Government.

It is likely that the Moroccan government will announce its decision about the legal use of cannabis on Thursday, whether to approve the bill and thus permitting the legal use of cannabis in the country or reject it.

Legalizing cannabis use in Morocco will allow the farming, export, and domestic sale of cannabis for medical and industrial use.

According to many Moroccan activists, the legalization of cannabis uses would help thousands of farmers who live under constant threat from the judicial prosecutions in the Rif mountains in the north of the country.

Morocco reduced the amount of land where cannabis is cultivated from 134,000 hectares in 2003 to 47,000 hectares six years ago, the Interior Ministry has said.

Morocco is being considered among the biggest producers of the cannabis in the world.
