Russia seeks new air links with Morocco to overcome Western ban

Russia continues its efforts to find new alternatives for its airline companies after the Western’s decision to ban all flights from and to Russia as a reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to media reports, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has issued a communiqué to the heads of the country's airlines, inviting them to reflect on the opening of new air services in eleven countries, including Morocco.

"I ask the heads of airlines to submit proposals to the Department of Transport Regulation and International Cooperation of the Federal Air Transport Agency for the development of air transport in the following countries: Myanmar, Malaysia, South Africa, Tunisia, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia," the Russian agency published.

Morocco and Russia related to each other with several flights between Moscow and Casablanca, however, the number of links and flights could increase after the Russian intention to widen the aerial links with the Kingdom of Morocco.

For its part, Morocco could benefit from this, as the new flights and aerial links are expected to raise the number of Russian tourists who would choose Morocco as their new tourist destination, especially since European airspace is not allowed for Russian airplanes.

Tourism is an important sector in the Moroccan economy, the Russian tourist flows could contribute to Morocco’s plan of recovery from the Covid-19 repercussions.
