Spanish paper: Morocco to build a military naval base on Dakhla coast

Morocco plans to build a military naval base on the coast of Dakhla city in the region of Moroccan Sahara (South of the country), Spanish newspaper El Espanol reported Sunday.

According to the same source, this naval base would have the capacity of hosting 1700 Moroccan Royal Navy soldiers and would provide logistical and military support to friendly African countries, and to host peacekeeping missions of the United Nations Organization (UN) and the African Union (AU).

El Espanol stated that The United Arab of Emirates would contribute to building this large naval base that is close to the Spanish Canary Island with only 430 Km of maritime distance.

Morocco has not issued yet any information regarding this project.

Close to this topic, Morocco has recently inaugurated a military airbase in the Sidi Yahya El Gharb region, in the suburb of the capital of Rabat, and it is the first military airbase Morocco owns, and it contains Air defense systems were acquired from China and Israel.

Morocco has allocated for 2022 a budget of $12,8 billion distained to the defense sector in order to continue the strategy of military modernization.
