The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday thanked Morocco for hosting the meeting of the Libyan 6+6 Joint Commission in Bouznika (22 May to 6 June), which reached a compromise on the laws for the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of the year in the country.
In a statement, the Mission expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the 6+6 Commission, which was mandated by the Libyan House of Representatives and the Libyan Council of State to draft the electoral laws, and thanked the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco for hosting the Commission.
UNSMIL also took note of the outcome of the work of the 6+6 Commission in Bouznika, recognizing that "important elements of the electoral laws and related issues require the participation and support of a wide range of Libyan institutions, representatives of civil society, including women and youth, and political and security actors in order to enable inclusive, credible and successful elections."
In this regard, the Mission stressed that it will continue to work with all relevant Libyan institutions, including the Presidential Council, to facilitate a process among all actors "that addresses the contentious elements of the electoral framework, ensures the necessary political agreement on the path to the elections and allows for a level playing field for all candidates."
In this regard, UNSMIL calls on all Libyan actors to work in a spirit of compromise to resolve all outstanding issues and create a more secure and conducive environment for the holding of elections in 2023, while reaffirming its commitment, in accordance with its mandate, to the holding of "transparent, inclusive and credible elections that will allow the Libyan people to freely choose their representatives and renew the legitimacy of the country's institutions."
Earlier, the United Nations, through the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed its appreciation to Morocco for its facilitation efforts aimed at reaching compromises on the electoral laws among the Libyan parties.
The final agreement on these laws will be discussed in the coming days in the presence of the presidents of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Council of State, said Jalal Shwehdi, member of the House of Representatives, during the closing session of the work of the 6+6 Commission, in the presence of Omar Abu Lifa, member of the High Council of State, and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
Morocco continues its efforts to find a definitive solution to the Libyan crisis in order to ensure the unity, stability and progress of Libya by supporting its efforts to organize elections in a comprehensive, inclusive and pragmatic framework.
