UN Tourism Secretary-General Calls Morocco 'Tourism Model Merging Innovation & Cultural Heritage'

Drawing on its commitment to innovation, ancestral culture and strategic vision, Morocco has succeeded in transforming the tourism sector into a pillar of prosperity, making the Kingdom a model to follow in this field, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said on Tuesday in Marrakech.

Speaking at the opening of the international conference on technological innovation and tourism investment, Pololikashvili praised the Kingdom's efforts to combine cultural heritage and modernity, while making innovation a key lever for its attractiveness.

Morocco, with a record 17.4 million visitors in 2024, is constantly reinforcing its position on the international stage, he pointed out, recalling the Kingdom's recent nomination as co-host of the 2030 Football World Cup, which testifies to the country's momentum and commitment to major world events.

As UN Tourism, he said, “we are proud to accompany Morocco in this dynamic and to attend this conference, which highlights innovative solutions to the tourism challenges of tomorrow. Together, we are working towards sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism, which benefits not only visitors, but also local communities”.

Held by Morocco's Agency for Tourism Development (SMIT) and the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, in close collaboration with UN Tourism, this event will highlight the synergies between innovation and investment.

The conference offers a unique platform for exploring the latest global trends in technological innovation applied to tourism, encouraging investment in smart solutions and promoting the digital growth of small and medium-sized businesses in the sector.

In addition to discussions and debates, the conference is also an opportunity to celebrate excellence in innovation, with an awards ceremony recognizing the most promising start-ups who participated in the competition launched by SMIT in partnership with UN Tourism.
