US Committed to Ending Sahara Conflict Within Moroccan Sovereignty – Morocco’s UN Envoy

Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has stated that the United States is demonstrating a clear will to resolve the Sahara conflict within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. He expressed hope that Morocco would mark the 50th anniversary of the Green March in November with the definitive resolution of this long-standing dispute “with our Algerian neighbors.”

In an interview with Medi1 TV Morocco, Hilale noted that the upcoming briefing by UN envoy Staffan de Mistura coincides with Washington’s renewed affirmation of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. He said the U.S. emphasized—using “clear and strong language”—that Morocco’s autonomy initiative is the only viable solution to the dispute.

Hilale highlighted that what distinguishes the U.S. position this time is its firm commitment not only to relaunch discussions but also to actively contribute to reaching a resolution based on Morocco’s autonomy plan, which is in line with King Mohammed VI’s vision. “There is no other alternative,” he stressed.

The Moroccan diplomat also pointed out the broad international support Morocco has garnered, with over 110 countries from across continents backing its position. He said this growing momentum is bolstered by Washington’s support and its willingness to help broker a bilateral solution—but under Moroccan sovereignty.

Commenting on the weight of the U.S. stance, Hilale described it as having a “major impact,” especially given that the U.S. is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, alongside France. He noted that both countries are set to play a key role in helping Morocco achieve a political settlement to the conflict.

Hilale criticized Algeria’s continued refusal to engage in roundtable discussions, accusing it of clinging to a “Cold War-era narrative.” He also questioned the legitimacy of the Polisario Front, saying it lacks democratic mandate and has never been elected by the local population—unlike in Morocco’s southern provinces, where regular elections are held with full citizen participation.

He further warned of the terrorist threat posed by the Polisario, highlighting its ties to Iran and the fact that its militias have received training in Syria with funding and support from Algeria. Hilale recalled that Morocco had sounded the alarm over this years ago and pointed to recent revelations by The Washington Post, which reported on Iran’s involvement in training Polisario fighters in Syria.
