Morocco’s Football Federation to Appeal CAF Sanctions Over AFCON Match Incidents with Senegal

Morocco’s national football governing body, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), announced on Tuesday that it will appeal disciplinary decisions issued by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following disturbances during an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals match against Senegal.

In an official statement, the FRMF said it had reviewed the rulings communicated by CAF’s Disciplinary Board concerning incidents that occurred during the Morocco–Senegal game held on January 18, 2026, as part of the 35th edition of the continental tournament.

According to the Moroccan federation, the match was disrupted after Senegalese players and members of the technical staff left the field, followed by a pitch invasion by some Senegal supporters and violent clashes that interrupted proceedings.

The FRMF argued that the sanctions imposed by CAF do not reflect the seriousness and scale of the incidents. The federation referenced a formal letter sent by its president to the head of CAF outlining Morocco’s objections and legal position.

While not detailing the specific penalties handed down, the FRMF stated that it would pursue all available regulatory channels to challenge the decisions, emphasizing its intention to seek what it described as a more proportionate assessment of responsibility.

The appeal will be submitted through CAF’s established disciplinary procedures. The federation added that it remains committed to respecting continental football regulations while defending its interests in the case.
