HRC: 39 Countries Support Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative to Resolve Sahara Dispute

A coalition of 39 countries expressed their full support for Morocco’s stance on the Western Sahara issue during the 12th meeting of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Ali Mohamed Saeed Majawar, praised the opening of consulates in Dakhla and Laayoune as a significant step reflecting growing international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

In his address, the Yemeni envoy emphasized the importance of fostering development and prosperity for the region’s inhabitants. He reiterated that the Sahara issue is a political dispute under the jurisdiction of the UN Security Council, which considers Morocco’s autonomy initiative a serious and credible solution to achieve a final settlement of this regional conflict.

The coalition supports efforts to revive the UN-led political process in line with the framework established during the Geneva roundtable discussions and consistent with Security Council resolutions advocating for a realistic, lasting, and consensus-based political solution.

The Yemeni ambassador concluded by underscoring that resolving the dispute would significantly advance the aspirations of African and Arab nations for integration and development, a goal Morocco continues to pursue actively.
