India’s Embassy in Rabat Celebrates 11th International Day of Yoga Across Morocco

The Embassy of India in Rabat has launched a series of nationwide events to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY), uniting communities across Morocco under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” The initiative seeks to promote holistic well-being, cultural harmony, and sustainable living through the ancient Indian practice.

According to a statement from the Indian embassy, free yoga sessions are being organized in four major Moroccan cities as part of this year’s celebrations:

  • Tangier – June 20 at Fairmont Tazi Palace
  • Rabat – June 21 at Parc Hassan II
  • Marrakech – June 21 at Cultural Center Les Etoiles de Jemma al Fna
  • Casablanca – June 22 at Anfa Park

The same source noted that a prelude to the main events was held on June 3 at Rabat’s Botanical Gardens, drawing a large and diverse crowd of students, professionals, diplomats, wellness advocates, and local residents. The gathering marked a collective expression of peace, balance, and shared humanity through yoga.

India’s Ambassador to Morocco, Sanjay Rana, emphasized the universal appeal of yoga in the embassy’s statement: "Yoga is India’s timeless gift to the world. It transcends borders, languages, and cultures, uniting people in their pursuit of balance, resilience, and harmony. The enthusiastic participation across Moroccan cities this year reaffirms yoga's role as a universal bridge between tradition and modern well-being."

Led by instructors from both India and Morocco, the sessions feature a mix of energizing physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and guided meditation, highlighting yoga’s holistic benefits for the body and mind.

The International Day of Yoga was first recognized by the United Nations in 2014 following a resolution proposed by India and co-sponsored by 175 member states. The date, June 21, was chosen to coincide with the Summer Solstice—a symbol of light, renewal, and balance. The word "yoga" itself originates from the Sanskrit root “yuj,” meaning “to join,” symbolizing the union of body and mind, and the harmony between humanity and nature.

This year’s activities not only reaffirm the global relevance of yoga, but also underscore the deepening cultural and wellness ties between India and Morocco. The Embassy has invited all residents and citizens to participate in the upcoming sessions and join this global call for unity, sustainability, and well-being.
