The International Development Agency revealed, during the intervention of its representative at the general debate session of the 60th United Nations Human Rights Council held today, Wednesday, in Geneva, the existence of reports confirming that armed groups in the Tindouf camps, under the control of the Polisario Front, have committed violations against Sahrawi residents.
The speaker stated that these violations occur with the complicity of the host country, Algeria, adding: “This is not an exceptional matter, but rather part of a general pattern of systematic human rights violations, affecting women and girls who have been subjected to sexual abuse.”
The Agency’s representative explained that the camps located on Algerian territory suffer from a total absence of freedoms, with no judicial or legal safeguards to protect the residents. He cited testimonies from women who decided to speak out in order to curb the phenomenon of impunity and to hold the international community accountable.
The speaker also referred to the case of Polisario opponent Ahmed El Khalili, who has been forcibly disappeared, calling for international recognition of him as a victim of human rights violations in the Tindouf camps, and urging the prosecution of Polisario leaders involved in these crimes.
