King Mohammed VI Launches Major Railway Projects in Casablanca Worth 20 Billion Dirhams

King Mohammed VI has given the green light to a package of major railway projects in Casablanca, representing an investment of 20 billion dirhams. The initiative, launched on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, forms part of a broader national mobility program valued at 96 billion dirhams, aimed at reshaping urban and regional transport across Morocco.

The projects are designed to enhance transport services within Greater Casablanca, respond to rising demographic and economic pressures, and support Morocco’s transition toward a low-carbon mass transit system.

At the heart of the program is the construction of three next-generation stations: Casablanca-South in the Hay Hassani district, with a budget of 700 million dirhams and a capacity of 12 million passengers per year; Hassan II Grand Stadium Station in Benslimane (450 million dirhams); and a new station at Mohammed V International Airport (300 million dirhams) capable of handling 5 million travelers annually. All three projects are expected to be completed within 24 months.

The plan also includes building ten new suburban train stations, upgrading five existing ones, laying 260 kilometers of new track, and constructing or expanding 50 engineering structures. Two technical centers and five maintenance workshops are also part of the development.

By 2030, Casablanca will be served by a suburban rail network of three main lines spanning 92 kilometers, operating at intervals of just 7.5 minutes and with the capacity to move 150,000 passengers daily. The “Aero-Express” will further connect Casablanca-Port Station to Mohammed V International Airport with trains every 15 minutes.

To strengthen regional services, authorities will procure 48 new trains with over 1,000 seats each and speeds reaching 160 km/h, at a total cost of 7 billion dirhams. The supply contract has been awarded to South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, which will build a factory in Morocco to meet future demand and bolster the country’s export ambitions.

Funded 70% by the National Railways Office (ONCF) and 30% by regional authorities, the program represents a strategic step toward sustainable transport development. It also aims to integrate high-speed trains with regional services and urban networks such as trams and buses.

The government expects the projects to improve daily mobility, create new jobs, and reinforce Casablanca’s status as a leading economic hub.
