Morocco Becomes Germany’s Third-Largest Avocado Supplier with $80 Million in Exports

Morocco has emerged as the third-largest exporter of avocados to Germany during the 2024–2025 season, with export revenues reaching nearly $80 million, according to specialized market data cited by EastFruit.

The report highlights that Morocco more than doubled its avocado exports to Germany this season, reaching 19,600 metric tons between November 2024 and August 2025. This figure represents a sixfold increase compared to the 2021–2022 season — a record that reflects the growing dynamism of Moroccan agricultural exports to European markets.

Thanks to this performance, EastFruit notes that avocados have now become Morocco’s most exported fruit after clementines, with Germany ranking among the top five destinations for Moroccan fruit. The German market alone accounted for over 13 percent of Morocco’s total avocado exports during the first ten months of the 2024–2025 marketing season.

The surge is attributed to rising German demand for avocados and the diversification of sourcing markets, as Germany imported the green fruit from 30 different countries this season, including 12 suppliers that each shipped more than 1,000 tons.

Morocco’s climb to third place marks a significant comeback. The country had previously reached fifth position in the 2022–2023 season before slipping temporarily to eighth the following year due to lower shipments. However, it regained momentum this season, driven by stronger yields, expanded farmland, and improved export infrastructure.

According to EastFruit, Morocco is well positioned to maintain its new ranking in the German market, with several months remaining in the season. The steady expansion of cultivated areas and the increasing trust in Moroccan quality among European consumers are expected to sustain this upward trend.

In parallel, Moroccan avocado exports have also recorded significant growth in other destinations such as Switzerland and Canada, reinforcing the Kingdom’s position as a regional powerhouse in high-value agricultural exports. This progress underlines the success of Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its agri-food exports, particularly amid the global rise in demand for tropical fruits.

However, the achievement comes amid domestic criticism from opposition parties, who argue that the government’s agricultural policy favors export-oriented crops that require substantial water resources, at a time when the country continues to experience severe drought conditions for the seventh consecutive year.

Despite these challenges, Morocco’s rise in the global avocado trade demonstrates the resilience and competitiveness of its agricultural sector, as well as the country’s growing role in meeting Europe’s demand for premium fresh produce.
