U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has hailed the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara as a “historic” decision, reaffirming that the Southern Provinces have “always been an integral part of the Kingdom of Morocco.”
In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Wilson welcomed the resolution as a landmark step that strengthens international support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as “the only realistic and lasting solution” to the regional dispute.
“The Southern Provinces have always been a historical and integral part of the Kingdom of Morocco,” emphasized Wilson, who chairs the Morocco Caucus in the U.S. Congress, underscoring the strong and enduring bipartisan support Morocco enjoys in Washington.
The congressman also praised the efforts of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara in December 2020. He said the new UN resolution “builds on this success” by reinforcing dialogue, peace, and regional cooperation.
Wilson stressed that the Security Council’s decision reflects a growing international consensus around Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most credible and pragmatic path toward resolving the conflict, while promoting stability and development across North Africa.
His remarks came shortly after King Mohammed VI, in a speech delivered Friday evening, called for sincere and fraternal dialogue between Morocco and Algeria to overcome differences and build new relations based on mutual trust and good neighbourliness.
The congressman’s statement adds to the widening wave of international support following the adoption of Resolution 2797, which reaffirmed the Autonomy Plan as the basis for a realistic, compromise-based, and enduring political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
