Morocco’s National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Science and Techniques (CNESTEN) and Belgium’s Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN) have signed a cooperation agreement focused on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, on the sidelines of the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) held in Paris from November 4 to 6.
The agreement was signed by Hamid Marah, Director General of CNESTEN, and Peter Beten and Derrick-Philippe Gosselin, respectively Director General and Chairman of SCK-CEN. It aims to promote the exchange of expertise, as well as to strengthen scientific research, education, and professional training in the nuclear field.
According to CNESTEN, the partnership seeks to bolster regional and international capacities in the use of research reactors, contributing to advancements in nuclear science and technology in line with the highest international safety and security standards.
Both CNESTEN and SCK-CEN are recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as International Centers based on Research Reactors (ICERRs) — a designation granted to institutions that provide infrastructure and expertise to support global nuclear education and innovation.
The new agreement further reinforces Morocco’s growing role as a regional hub for nuclear research and training, in line with its commitment to the peaceful and responsible development of nuclear applications for science, medicine, and industry.
