Morocco, UN Counter-Terrorism Chief Discuss Rising Global Threats and New Areas of Cooperation

The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, held talks on Monday in Rabat with Alexander Zuev, the newly appointed Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, who is on a working visit to Morocco.

According to a joint statement from the DGSN and DGST, the meeting focused on the growing risks posed by terrorist groups across several volatile regions, including the Sahel-Saharan belt, the Horn of Africa, Syria, and Afghanistan. Both sides examined the evolving nature of these threats and the challenges they generate at regional and international levels.

The discussions also addressed ways to enhance cooperation and mutual support between Morocco and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, particularly in preventing and countering violent extremism. The two parties explored mechanisms to reinforce coordination in counterterrorism initiatives, expand joint programmes, and integrate new areas of collaboration, such as securing major sporting events against terrorist risks.

During the meeting, Zuev expressed strong interest in Morocco’s security model and its experience in dismantling terrorist networks, describing it as “essential” for strengthening global counterterrorism efforts. He stressed that Morocco’s approach constitutes a key reference for depriving terrorist organizations of safe havens, financing channels, and recruitment sources.

The visit reflects the ongoing commitment of the DGSN and DGST to boosting bilateral and multilateral security cooperation. It also underscores Morocco’s role as a reliable partner in international and UN-led initiatives to combat terrorism and extremism, reaffirming the Kingdom’s position as a central actor in promoting global security and stability.
