Morocco is set to experience a period of unstable weather marked by heavy rainfall, snowfall in mountainous areas, and a sharp drop in temperatures from Wednesday through Saturday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
In an orange-level weather alert, the DGM warned that strong and sometimes stormy rains, ranging between 30 and 50 millimeters, are expected from Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. until Thursday at midnight in the provinces of Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Khenifra, and Kelaa Sraghna.
Moderate to heavy rainfall, estimated at 20 to 30 millimeters, will also affect a wide range of other provinces, including Settat, Mohammedia, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Sidi Ifni, Taroudant, Tiznit, Kenitra, Sidi Slimane, Nouaceur, Benslimane, Khemisset, Berrechid, Rabat, Casablanca, Salé, Essaouira, Safi, El Jadida, and Skhirat-Temara, among others.
At the same time, significant snowfall is forecast in mountainous regions. The DGM expects snow accumulations of between 20 and 40 centimeters at elevations above 1,500 meters, from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday evening, particularly in the provinces of Midelt, Boulemane, Sefrou, Ifrane, Al Haouz, Azilal, and Ouarzazate.
Lighter snowfall, ranging from 7 to 20 centimeters, is also anticipated in the provinces of Al Hoceima, Taza, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Beni Mellal, Guercif, and Tinghir during the same period.
In addition to rain and snow, the meteorological authority warned of a cold spell affecting several interior and mountainous areas. Temperatures are expected to drop to between minus 7 and minus 3 degrees Celsius from Thursday through Saturday in provinces including Midelt, Boulemane, Tinghir, Azilal, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Taroudant, and Ifrane.
The DGM has urged citizens, particularly in mountainous and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as weather conditions deteriorate over the coming days.
