Bahrain reiterates support for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan

Bahrain has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and backed Rabat’s autonomy initiative as a realistic and feasible solution to the long-running dispute.

The position was outlined in a joint statement issued during an official visit to Bahrain by the Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, from 12 to 16 January, at the invitation of the Chairman of Bahrain’s Shura Council, Ali Bin Saleh Al-Saleh.

According to the statement, Bahrain reiterated its “support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and the autonomy initiative for settling the Moroccan Sahara issue”.

Bahrain also welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, describing it as an important step towards a realistic and applicable solution.

The visit was framed as part of efforts to strengthen what both sides described as the close and fraternal ties between the two kingdoms, in line with the guidance of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain.

Speaking during the visit, the chairman of Bahrain’s Shura Council highlighted the historical depth of relations between the two countries, saying their cooperation was built on shared values of partnership and common destiny.

He also praised Morocco’s role in promoting dialogue and cooperation among Arab and African parliaments, including through hosting parliamentary forums and meetings.

For his part, Mr Ould Errachid commended Bahrain’s growing role in Asia and its contribution to regional parliamentary cooperation. He welcomed Bahrain’s forthcoming chairmanship of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly from January 2026, expressing confidence that it would strengthen joint parliamentary action across the region.

The Moroccan speaker also said he was committed to enhancing parliamentary cooperation between Africa and Asia, drawing on Morocco’s strategic position and African ties, and to promoting South-South dialogue to address shared challenges and support peace and development.
