Morocco Issues Orange Alert for Snowfall, Heavy Rain, and Cold Wave

The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of snowfall, heavy rain, thundery showers, and a cold wave from Friday through Tuesday in several provinces across Morocco.

According to the DGM, heavy snowfall of 35 to 80 cm is expected from Friday at 6:00 p.m. until Monday at 6:00 a.m. in the provinces of Al Haouz, Azilal, and Chichaoua, at altitudes above 1,400 meters.

Snow accumulation ranging from 15 to 35 cm is also forecast over the same period at elevations above 1,300 meters in the provinces of Midelt, Beni Mellal, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Ifrane, Khenifra, Sefrou, Boulemane, Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, Guercif, Taza, and Taroudant.

Lighter snowfall of 10 to 15 cm is expected at altitudes exceeding 1,200 meters from Friday evening to Monday morning in Driouech, Figuig, Errachidia, Taourirt, and El Hajeb. Snowfall of similar intensity is also forecast above 1,500 meters in Chtouka Ait Baha and Tiznit during the same period.

In addition, heavy rain or thundery showers are expected from Friday at 6:00 p.m. to Saturday at 6:00 p.m., with rainfall amounts ranging between 20 and 40 mm in several provinces, including Kénitra, Sidi Slimane, Benslimane, Berrechid, Rabat, Khouribga, Salé, Skhirat-Temara, Meknes, Azilal, Casablanca, Mediouna, El Kelaâ des Sraghna, Mohammadia, Nouaceur, Khemisset, Al Hoceima, Al Haouz, Fquih Ben Salah, Tanger-Assilah, Ouezzane, Beni Mellal, Larache, Chefchaouen, Sidi Kacem, Khénifra, and El Hajeb.

The DGM further warned of a cold wave from Sunday to Tuesday, with temperatures expected to range between minus 9°C and minus 3°C in the provinces of Tinghir, Al Haouz, Midelt, Boulemane, Sefrou, Guercif, Taza, Ouarzazate, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, and Khenifra.

Authorities have advised residents and travelers in affected areas to take necessary precautions, particularly in high-altitude regions prone to heavy snowfall and low temperatures.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution, as snow accumulation and wet conditions could create hazardous driving conditions and possible road closures.

Farmers and livestock owners have been encouraged to protect crops and animals against snow and frost, given the potential impact of the cold wave on agriculture.

Public services and emergency responders are on alert to assist communities, including flood management and snow removal operations where necessary.

Meteorologists note that the combination of cold air masses and incoming moisture from the Atlantic is driving both significant snowfall and a drop in temperatures.

Residents are advised to follow official announcements and local forecasts for updates as weather conditions evolve over the coming days.

In high-altitude provinces, schools and public clubsmay adjust schedules or suspend activities depending on snow accumulation and accessibility.

Travelers crossing affected areas should allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes in mountainous regions.

This multi-day weather event highlights the importance of preparedness and adherence to safety measures, as several Moroccan provinces face snowfall, heavy rain, and freezing temperatures simultaneously.
