Senegal Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara

The Republic of Senegal has reiterated its firm and unwavering support for the Kingdom of Morocco’s territorial integrity and full sovereignty over its national territory, including the Sahara region, underscoring the consistency of Dakar’s position on the issue.

This stance was expressed in a joint communiqué adopted on Monday in Rabat following the meeting of the Morocco–Senegal High Joint Partnership Commission. The session was co-chaired by Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, as part of efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

On this occasion, the Senegalese side renewed its full support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco under its sovereignty, describing it as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the regional dispute. Senegal emphasized that resolving the issue must take place exclusively within the framework of the United Nations.

The communiqué also highlighted Senegal’s welcome of the United Nations Security Council’s adoption, on October 31, 2025, of Resolution 2797. The resolution enshrines Morocco’s autonomy initiative, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as the sole serious, credible, and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to the Sahara issue.

Senegal’s renewed position reflects a long-standing alignment with Morocco on the Sahara question and reinforces Rabat’s growing diplomatic support at both the African and international levels. Dakar has consistently backed Morocco’s efforts to achieve a political resolution that guarantees stability and regional integration.

The reaffirmation came as Morocco and Senegal reviewed the progress of their strategic partnership, reaffirming their shared commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, solidarity, and a common vision for peace and development across Africa.
