EU Seeks to Deepen Partnership With Morocco Amid Shared Global Challenges

The European Union is keen to strengthen its partnership with Morocco in light of shared regional and international challenges, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said on Thursday.

Speaking to the press in Brussels ahead of the opening of the 15th session of the Morocco–EU Association Council, Kallas said the meeting aims above all to “do more together,” particularly in the areas of migration and security cooperation.

The Vice-President of the European Commission also highlighted Morocco’s “very significant role” within the United Nations Human Rights Council, underscoring the Kingdom’s growing diplomatic weight on multilateral platforms.

According to Kallas, discussions during the Association Council will address several major international issues, including the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and developments in the Sahel region.

In this context, she stressed the importance of strengthening dialogue and cooperation at the international level, pointing to “Morocco’s unique experience in combating terrorism and radicalization” as a key asset for joint action.

Gaza, Kallas said, remains “a priority” for the European Union. She thanked Morocco for hosting a meeting of the Global Alliance in support of the two-State solution, describing the initiative as “the strongest international forum” backing that approach.

The EU’s top diplomat also announced that the European Union has adopted a new common position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, in line with the latest United Nations Security Council resolution.

“Morocco is already an important partner for the European Union,” Kallas said. “After 30 years of an association agreement, it is time to do much more together.”
