Ceuta residents thwart an attempt by a Spanish extremist party to organize a demonstration against Morocco

Ceuta residents expressed yesterday their categorical rejection of any attempt to escalate the tension with Morocco after the crisis that the City had lived because of the influx of immigrants.

The president of the Spanish far-right party named “VOX”, Santiago Pascal, had arrived in the city in order to organize a demonstration against Morocco, and give a speech in front of his supporters.

Dozens of Ceuta residents gathered in front of the hotel that Santiago Pascal had stayed, and raised slogans demanding him to leave the city, which led to clashes with “VOX” supporters, then with the police.

The clashes between the police and the people of Ceuta caused the cancelation of the demonstration of “VOX” and the speech of its president.

According to the autonomous government of Ceuta, the people of the city have expressed their refusal to all kinds of extremism, affirming that the city needs peace dialogue.

The “VOX” party who is well-known for its hostility to Morocco, was intending to organize a demonstration to criticize Morocco and hold it accountable for the influx of immigrants that the city had recently suffered.

Thousands of Moroccan people, among them minors, had entered Ceuta through sea days ago, which lead Spain to accuse Morocco of blackmailing it, because of the "Polisario" leader crisis.

Spain had decided to host the “Polisario” leader, for humanitarian reasons due to his sickness, according to the Spanish Foreign affairs, but Morocco had considered the decision as a hostile step towards the high Moroccan interests.

Polisario is a separatist movement that fights against Morocco claiming that the Western Sahara is a land occupied by Morocco, whereas Morocco considers it as part of its territory.
