Morocco’s ambassador prepares to return to Madrid as the diplomatic dispute with Spain is over

Morocco’s ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, prepares to return to Madrid in order to resume her diplomatic missions, after the Moroccan king speech to the Nation on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People on August 20, 2021, that ended the diplomatic dispute with Spain.

Benyaich was summoned by the Moroccan foreign affairs ministry for consultation in May, as a protest move against Spain in relation to the crisis of ‘Polisario’ separatist leader, Brahim Ghali, who was received by Spain secretly last April in order to receive treatment for his infection with the Coronavirus.

The hosting of Brahim Ghali by Spain in coordination with Algeria, the biggest supporter of the ‘Polisario’ front, caused huge anger in the Moroccan side and led to a diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid that continued until August 20, 2021.

The King of Morocco, Mohamed VI, announced in his speech that he followed personally the mutual discussions between Morocco and Spain to end the dispute between the two parties.

"With a feeling of optimism, I sincerely look forward to continuing to work with the Spanish government and with the Spanish Prime Minister, His Excellency Mr. Pedro Sanchez, to usher in a new, unprecedented phase in the relations between the two countries, on the basis of trust, transparency, mutual respect and the fulfillment of obligations," the King said in his speech.

The speech is considered the “official” end of the diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid, for this reason, the Moroccan ambassador to Madrid is expected to return to Spain in the coming days.
