Sudan: 'Failed' Coup Attempt, Army Takes Control

A "failed" coup attempt took place on Tuesday in Sudan, state media said, as the Arab country undergoes political transformation since the ouster of Omar al-Bashir more than two years ago.

Taher Abouhaja, a senior member of the Sovereign Council; the country's highest decision-making body, said in an address broadcast on state television that the state had "foiled an attempt to seize power."

Sudanese security services blocked the main bridge linking Khartoum to its twin city of Omdurman, on the other side of the Nile. However, traffic in central Khartoum seemed to be flowing, including around the army headquarters.

The coup attempt targeted the Sudanese transitional government formed after the ouster of Omar al-Bashir. Government and military officials say the unidentified perpetrators had also attempted to take over the state media building but "failed."
