Burkina Faso Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sahara Sovereignty, Vows Deeper Strategic Partnership

Burkina Faso has reiterated its firm and consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara, while welcoming the United Nations Security Council’s historic Resolution 2797, which recognizes the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only serious, credible and lasting basis for resolving the artificial dispute.

This position was formalized in a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the 5th Session of the Morocco–Burkina Faso Joint Cooperation Commission, co-chaired in Ouagadougou by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

In the communiqué, Traoré reaffirmed his country’s long-standing and consistent stance in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, while praising the growing international consensus promoted under the leadership of King Mohammed VI in support of the Autonomy Initiative. He also expressed his country’s “great satisfaction” with the adoption, on 31 October 2025, of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which considers the Moroccan proposal as the sole realistic framework for a political solution within Morocco’s sovereignty.

For his part, Nasser Bourita welcomed the positive value of this international decision and expressed, on behalf of the Moroccan government, deep gratitude for Burkina Faso’s unconditional and constant support for Morocco’s national cause, particularly within regional and international organizations. He also highlighted the symbolic and political importance of Burkina Faso’s opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla in October 2020, describing it as a clear reflection of the continuity of this historic position.

Beyond political coordination, the two countries reaffirmed their ambition to transform their bilateral relationship into an exceptional model of South–South cooperation in Africa. The talks provided an opportunity to explore new areas of cooperation, particularly in air transport, infrastructure and logistics, while several legal instruments were signed covering security, trade, labor, housing, transport, agriculture, vocational training and youth.

Both ministers welcomed the steady pace of implementation of the commitments made during the 4th session of the Joint Commission held in June 2023, and pledged to further consolidate this momentum through expanded economic and trade partnerships, as well as cooperation in priority sectors such as defense, food security, water, health and human capacity building.

During the meeting, Minister Traoré praised the Royal Initiatives of King Mohammed VI and expressed admiration for the Moroccan monarch’s leadership in promoting peace, stability and development across Africa, particularly in the Sahel region. He described Morocco as a strategic partner for African countries in matters of security and sustainable development.

Traoré also welcomed the African Atlantic States Initiative launched by King Mohammed VI, which aims to make the Atlantic space a new framework for pragmatic intra-African cooperation. He further commended the Royal Audience granted to the foreign ministers of the Sahel States Alliance and expressed full support for the Moroccan initiative to facilitate access of Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean, reaffirming Burkina Faso’s commitment to accelerating its implementation.

The two sides concluded their talks by reaffirming their shared determination to strengthen, diversify and institutionalize their strategic partnership, with the objective of making Morocco–Burkina Faso relations a benchmark for African South–South cooperation.
