Senegalese Prime Minister Begins Two-Day Working Visit to Morocco

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko arrived in the early hours of Monday morning at Rabat–Salé Airport, kicking off a two-day working visit to the Kingdom at the head of a high-level delegation. He was welcomed by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch.

This official visit is taking place in the context of the 15th session of the Moroccan–Senegalese High Joint Commission for Partnership, scheduled to be held in the capital, Rabat, on January 26 and 27. The visit comes in the aftermath of the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco, a match that was marked by a tense and emotionally charged atmosphere.

Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch had held a phone call on January 21 with his Senegalese counterpart, Ousmane Sonko, during which both sides agreed to convene the 15th session of the High Joint Commission for Moroccan–Senegalese Partnership as scheduled in Rabat, according to a statement from the Moroccan government.

The same statement noted that a Moroccan–Senegalese Economic Forum will be organized on the sidelines of the commission’s meetings, with the aim of strengthening economic partnership, encouraging mutual investment, and opening new avenues for cooperation between economic stakeholders in both countries.

The statement further stressed that the phone call was an opportunity to highlight the depth of the exceptional and strategic relations between Morocco and Senegal, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, reaffirming the strength of bilateral ties built on solid human, religious, and economic foundations, and reflecting a close convergence of visions and aspirations between Rabat and Dakar.

The visit is expected to include a series of bilateral meetings and expanded talks bringing together government officials from both sides, focusing on ways to enhance cooperation in several priority sectors, particularly in the economic and investment fields, as well as on issues related to regional partnership of mutual interest.

These discussions are expected to lead to in-depth exchanges on mechanisms for implementing existing agreements and exploring new opportunities for cooperation, whether at the governmental level or among economic actors, with a view to giving fresh momentum to Moroccan–Senegalese relations in the coming period.

The outcomes of these talks and meetings are expected to be announced in the coming hours through official statements or joint declarations.
