Israel's military chief heads to U.S. for issues about Iran

Israel's military chief Aviv Kochavi flew on Friday to Washington to discuss issues regarding Iran with U.S. military officials.

During his five-day visit, Kochavi is expected to meet officials such as U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark A. Milley, an Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement.

The meetings will focus on "issues related to the Iranian nuclear threat, Iran's entrenchment efforts, Hezbollah's force build-up efforts, the implications of the precision missile threat, as well as joint force design projects with the United States," the statement read.

The visit comes amid advance in the talks in Vienna over reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal as U.S. President Joe Biden's administration has indicated it is open to easing economic sanctions against Iran, according to U.S. media reports.

In a public speech in January, Kochavi echoed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's view, saying a renewal of the nuclear agreement might enable Iran to develop nuclear weapons and is a threat to Israel.
