Amid Broad US Moves to End the Dispute, Washington Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Autonomy in Western Sahara

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative to resolve the dispute in Western Sahara, during a briefing delivered by Ambassador Tammy Bruce, Deputy Representative of the United States to the United Nations, before the UN Security Council in New York last Monday.

In her remarks, published on the website of the US Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Bruce highlighted that the US-drafted resolution adopted by the Security Council, Resolution 2797 on 31 October 2025, reaffirmed the Council’s support for negotiations aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable solution based on Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

The US envoy emphasized that the Security Council expressed strong support for the negotiations, noting that this stance reflects the United States’ steadfast commitment to upholding international rule of law and resolving conflicts through UN mechanisms.

Bruce further stressed that Washington views Morocco’s autonomy plan as a realistic and credible framework to end the dispute in Western Sahara, and that continued adherence to this framework represents a key step toward regional stability and enhanced development.

The US announcement of its renewed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative coincided with the visit of US Presidential Advisor Massad Boulos to Algeria on the same day, where he met with the Algerian Foreign Minister. The Western Sahara issue was reportedly among the topics discussed, signaling broad US coordination across the region to resolve the dispute.

These moves also coincided with recent meetings in Washington between US officials and a delegation representing the Polisario Front. The outcomes of these meetings have not been publicly disclosed, amid expectations that the Polisario delegation did not succeed in discussing any solution outside the framework of Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

It is noteworthy that Resolution 2797, adopted by the Security Council on 31 October 2025, emphasized the necessity of negotiations among the parties to reach a final political solution based on expanded autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

In parallel, Morocco is currently working to detail its autonomy proposal and how it would be implemented on the ground, with the aim of submitting it later to the United Nations for discussion, ensuring clarity in all stages of implementation and practical mechanisms to guarantee the plan’s success.

In recent years, Morocco has succeeded in garnering broad international support for its autonomy initiative, with backing from numerous countries, including major European nations, as well as dozens of states across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, giving the Moroccan proposal significant credibility and strength on the international stage.

This international support is considered a key factor reinforcing ongoing negotiations, strengthening Morocco’s position at the United Nations, lending broad legitimacy to a solution based on autonomy, and highlighting continued international recognition of the Moroccan proposal as the most viable framework to resolve the dispute.
