Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita revealed that King Mohammed VI personally conducted a series of diplomatic contacts with member states of the UN Security Council to ensure the adoption of the resolution supporting Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Sahara.
Speaking to 2M television, Bourita said these contacts took place over the past five to six days and were decisive in securing the minimum required threshold of nine votes in favor, without any veto being used.
He noted that the current composition of the Security Council is more complex than in previous years, with fewer countries closely aligned with Morocco. However, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom maintained clear and consistent support for the resolution from the outset.
According to Bourita, King Mohammed VI followed the developments of the vote on a daily basis and personally intervened with several world leaders, helping to raise the number of votes in favor from six to nine, and eventually to eleven.
Regarding the abstentions of Russia and China, Bourita explained that their decisions were linked to their respective disputes with the United States. He stressed that the avoidance of a Russian veto was due to the direct involvement of the Moroccan monarch.
As for Pakistan’s abstention, the foreign minister attributed it to the country’s position on the Kashmir issue, noting that Islamabad tends to view similar international matters through the lens of its own conflict with India.
