Exclusive: 'Polisario' elements slipped across Mauritania border to launch unsuccessful attack on Guerguerat

The Polisario front elements who launched yesterday night an unsuccessful attack on the border point of Guerguarate between Morocco and Mauritania likely slipped across an unguarded zone from the Mauritanian side, a private source said to Assahifa Arabic.

According to the same source, the Polisario militia launched 4 shells behind the Moroccan security wall, which had been built by Moroccan forces around the Guerguarate zone in late 2020, so there was no material or human losses in the Guergurate.

The Moroccan forces responded immediately over the Polisario elements attack and bombarded their used site to launch their 4 shells, said the private source, adding that no confirmed information about the losses.

Assahifa's source said that after Polisario's failing attack, Moroccan forces communicated their counterpart in the Mauritanian part. They agreed to take measures and strengthen their cooperation to confront any future similar attack on the border.

Polisario front represents itself as the only legitimate representative for what it calls 'the Sahrawi people' in the south of Morocco and claims that Morocco's southern provinces must be an independent country.

The zone of Tenduf in Algeria is considered the temporary headquarter of Polisario's leadership and its followers; it is used to organize their claims and attacks with Algeria's help.

For its part, Morocco considers the southern provinces of Sahara to always belong to its legitimate territory, confirming that with historical pieces of evidence that talk about the dependency of the people in Sahara to Morocco.

The Sahara conflict had sparked immediately after the Spanish colonization left the south of Morocco in 1975. It lasted until 1991 when a cease-fire agreement was reached between the Polisario Front and Morocco. However, Morocco kept its control over 80 percent of the Sahara, whereas Polisario claimed it liberated 20 percent.

In late 2020 some Pro-Polisario came to the Guerguarate and cut the road traffic for a week. Morocco sent its army to end this situation and deployed its forces to stop any other future attempt to cut the road traffic. From that point, Polisario claimed that Morocco violated the cease-fire agreement of 1991 and announced its return to the armed action against Morocco.
