GCC Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sahara Sovereignty and Autonomy Initiative

The Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for the Arab States reaffirmed on Wednesday Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and expressed its firm support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as a solution to the Sahara issue.

In its final communiqué concluding the 46th session held in Manama, Bahrain, the Council welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which formally recognizes Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as a key step toward a realistic and achievable resolution of the regional dispute.

The Council also praised the decision of King Mohammed VI to present the initiative to the UN Security Council and to designate October 31 of each year as a national holiday, officially named “Unity Day.”

This position underscores the consistent and steadfast support of the GCC states for Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, reaffirming their backing of Morocco’s territorial integrity and full sovereignty over its lands.

The communiqué highlighted that the support of the GCC reflects the deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties shared between Morocco and the Gulf states, rooted in longstanding relations of mutual trust and brotherhood.

Morocco’s engagement with the GCC has historically been marked by close political, economic, and social cooperation. The Kingdom’s invitation to join the GCC as an observer in 2011 was cited as a demonstration of Morocco’s prominent standing among Gulf nations.

Observers note that the GCC’s continued endorsement reinforces Morocco’s position in the international arena, bolstering the Kingdom’s efforts to gain broader recognition of its sovereignty over the Sahara.
