Morocco has witnessed heavy rainfall since Saturday, causing flooding in several regions and cities, with Safi and its surrounding province emerging as the hardest hit, according to local authorities.
Exceptional thunderstorms swept through Safi Province on Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, triggering unprecedented flash floods within less than an hour, local officials said. The floods resulted in a preliminary death toll of seven people, after torrential waters rushed into homes and commercial premises.
Authorities also reported 20 injured people, suffering from varying degrees of severity, who were transferred to Mohammed V Hospital in Safi for medical treatment. Health monitoring and emergency follow-ups are still ongoing.
Material damage in Safi has been described as extensive, particularly in the old city, where floodwaters inundated around 70 houses and shops, notably along Bir Anzaran Street and Abou Eddahab Square. The floods also swept away around ten vehicles, damaged the road linking Safi to the Ahrara commune via Provincial Road No. 2300, and caused traffic disruptions across several parts of the city.
Local sources indicated that water levels in some neighborhoods of Safi rose to more than four meters, plunging the city into a state of emergency and complicating rescue and mobility efforts.
Other Moroccan cities were also affected. In Tetouan, heavy downpours led to road closures, while residents of low-lying areas such as Kouilma reported water infiltrating ground-floor homes. The coastal national road connecting Tetouan and Al Hoceima was cut off near the Amtar commune due to flooding and landslides.
Similar flooding was recorded on Saturday in Errachidia, where rainwater submerged several streets and residential areas, reviving concerns over seasonal flood risks.
Local authorities in Safi confirmed that all public services and relevant departments have been fully mobilized, deploying logistical resources and personnel to respond to the emergency, assist affected residents, and restore damaged infrastructure. Search operations are still underway for potential missing persons, while efforts continue to reopen roads and resume essential services.
