Indian Diplomatic Source to Assahifa: Modi’s Visit to Morocco Confirmed, Awaiting Bilateral Agreement on Date

A diplomatic source within the Indian Ministry of External Affairs informed Assahifa that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Kingdom of Morocco is included in his upcoming foreign engagements, but it is still pending a bilateral agreement between New Delhi and Rabat on the exact date of execution.

The same source added that, contrary to what was reported by some Indian media outlets recently—claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Morocco at the beginning of July—the visit has not yet been officially scheduled. The source noted that such high-level visits require bilateral coordination that leads to the setting of a mutually agreeable date.

Nevertheless, the visit itself will take place, the source affirmed, adding that an agreement on its timing and details is highly likely to be finalized soon. He further stated that the visit is expected to give a strong boost to bilateral relations between the two countries and result in major decisions to strengthen ties between Rabat and New Delhi.

It is worth noting that Indian media outlets, particularly The Economic Times, reported in recent days that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to make an official visit to the Kingdom of Morocco in early July as part of a broader tour that includes five countries across Africa, Latin America, and West Asia.

The paper noted that the anticipated visit to Morocco, which has been in preparation for years and delayed multiple times due to scheduling commitments, is expected to feature a meeting between Modi and Moroccan King Mohammed VI in the capital, Rabat—a stop described as strategically significant due to Morocco’s growing regional importance.

In this context, the same source highlighted that Morocco is considered one of the emerging Arab economies with a strong presence in West Africa and Southern Europe. He added that Morocco has become, in many respects, a cornerstone in North Africa.

This visit is expected to significantly advance Morocco–India relations, particularly given that Morocco is among the most qualified African countries to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement. The country also boasts promising industrial sectors that position it as a key partner for India on the continent.

It is also worth mentioning that Indian Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arun Kumar Chatterjee, recently stated that India enjoys strong relations with the Kingdom of Morocco and that there is tremendous untapped potential between the two countries. He noted that both sides are working toward fully leveraging this potential.

In response to a question posed by Assahifa English during a meeting held by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs with an international delegation of journalists in New Delhi in mid-June, Chatterjee said that India also aims, within the framework of its strong ties with Morocco, to double the volume of bilateral trade in the coming years, noting that current trade volume stands at around $2.5 billion.

The Indian official further stated that India imports large quantities of phosphate and fertilizers from Morocco. In this regard, he said, “We hope to expand our cooperation in several other areas and strengthen it in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, automotive manufacturing, power transmission lines, chemicals, food products, and the hospitality industry.”

When Assahifa English asked about India’s position on the Moroccan Sahara issue, Chatterjee responded that “India supports a mutually acceptable solution to the issue, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.” He added that India supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara in pushing the process forward.

The Indian Secretary expressed his country’s hope that the envoy’s efforts would lead to the resumption of dialogue among all concerned parties and ultimately to a resolution of the issue, reaffirming India’s commitment to developing its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco in the years to come.
