The Italian Parliamentary Group in Support of the Autonomy Initiative in the Sahara has reiterated its firm backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the most credible and realistic solution to achieve a lasting settlement to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Following a meeting in Rabat with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, the group’s coordinator and Secretary-General of the Azione Party, Mr. Ettore Rosato, stated that the Autonomy Plan constitutes “a long-standing peace proposal” that reflects Morocco’s serious and credible commitment to achieving a sustainable and peaceful resolution under the auspices of the United Nations.
Mr. Rosato also praised the remarkable development dynamic in Morocco’s southern provinces, highlighting the region’s economic potential and modern infrastructure as tangible proof of Morocco’s commitment to advancing prosperity and stability in the Sahara.
The delegation’s visit, which runs until October 28, includes meetings with local authorities and elected officials in the Laâyoune–Sakia El Hamra region, as well as field visits to major socio-economic development projects.
Composed of seven members of the Italian Parliament and Senate representing both the ruling majority and opposition parties, the delegation’s mission coincides with Morocco’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Green March and the 200th anniversary of Moroccan-Italian diplomatic relations, reflecting the strong and enduring friendship between the two nations.
