During the General Debate under item 5 of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, the NGO Network for the Development of Mauritania took the floor through its representative, Abdelouahab Brahim Gain, to raise concerns about Algeria’s lack of cooperation with UN mechanisms.
The NGO stated that Algeria fails to implement the recommendations of international bodies concerning the fight against torture, enforced disappearances, summary executions, and arbitrary detention, particularly in the Tindouf camps.
According to the intervention, Algeria systematically refuses to engage with special procedures of the Human Rights Council and continues to ignore appeals regarding serious violations committed on its territory.
The Network emphasized that these violations are particularly concerning in the Tindouf camps, which fall under Algeria’s responsibility.
In its statement, the NGO called on Algeria to promptly accept the invitations of mandate holders in order to examine cases of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture.
It further highlighted that these abuses affect not only Algerians but also migrants and Sahrawis residing in the Tindouf camps.
The NGO urged the Human Rights Council to encourage Algeria to accede to the Convention on Enforced Disappearances.
