Morocco Highlights Global Importance of Stable Maritime Corridors at Atlantic Dialogues

Morocco places strong emphasis on the stability of maritime corridors, a strategic global issue closely tied to economic growth and social well-being, Morocco’s ambassador to the European Union, Ahmed Réda Chami, said on Friday in Rabat.

Speaking during a panel discussion held as part of the 14th edition of the annual international conference “The Atlantic Dialogues”, organized by the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), Chami underscored the central role played by these “sea highways,” through which more than 90% of global trade and a significant share of international Internet traffic via submarine cables transit.

The ambassador highlighted the leading position of the Port of Tangier Med, now considered “one of the largest in the world” in terms of connectivity and trade volume. He noted that the port links Morocco to over 70 countries and 180 ports, making it a critical hub for global maritime supply chains.

Chami stressed that thanks to sustained strategic investments and reinforced international cooperation, Morocco has consolidated its competitiveness in the maritime sector while contributing to greater global connectivity.

However, he also warned that maritime corridors are increasingly exposed to “many challenges,” including security threats linked to piracy, geopolitical tensions, and the effects of climate change, all of which require coordinated international action.

Held under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, this year’s edition of the Atlantic Dialogues—running from December 11 to 13—builds on last year’s expanded multidisciplinary format. The conference aims to analyze the multiple crises affecting the world today and propose reform pathways adapted to contemporary global realities.
