Morocco negotiates with Italy to acquire 2 multi-mission stealth frigates

Morocco is negotiating with Italy to acquire two multi-mission FREMM frigates capable of carrying long-range missiles, Italian media reported.

According to the Italian sources, Morocco and Greece are the last two countries to join the list of countries wishing to acquire FREMM frigates, which are manufactured in partnership between the Italian Fincantieri Corporation and the French Naval Group.

This Moroccan move comes after the Italian company obtained a deal to produce 6 frigates for Indonesia and 4 for the Egyptian Navy, in addition to the Greek demand of 4 frigates in the near term and 8 others in the future.

This frigate is classified as a multi-mission stealth frigate, and is part of the military naval fleet of the French, Italian and Egyptian forces.

The FREMM frigates are able to carry long-range missiles, anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles, with the ability to carry out attacks on land targets at a range of up to 180 km, and can also be equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes, and they are equipped with the SINIT electronic battle management system and a set of radars and sonar devices.

According to the American annual classification of the strength of the armies, "Global Fire Power" for the year 2021, the Moroccan Navy ranks 21 globally out of 140 countries and the Kingdom has 121 naval vessels, including 6 frigates, and what is interesting is that this classification placed it in a higher rank than its British, German, Spanish and Israeli counterparts.
