Morocco reaffirms commitment to two-state solution at UN General Assembly

Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, has reiterated the Kingdom’s steadfast support for the two-state solution in the Middle East, describing it as the “only path” to achieving lasting peace in the region.

Speaking on Tuesday at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Akhannouch stressed that Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, remains “convinced that the two-state solution is the only path to sustainable and comprehensive peace.”

He underlined that this solution “cannot be postponed or marginalized—it must be both a moral duty and an urgent political imperative.” Akhannouch called for the revival of a credible political process with a clear timeline that ensures the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights.

The Head of Government reaffirmed Morocco’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital and Gaza as an integral part of that state. He also highlighted the importance of the economic dimension in any peace process, noting the need to strengthen the institutions of the Palestinian Authority and support its ability to deliver peace, dignity, and development.

Emphasizing the importance of sustainable security mechanisms anchored in international law and mutual respect, Akhannouch urged the international community to mobilize efforts to end the ongoing war. He called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations.

Akhannouch also stressed the urgency of allowing the unimpeded and unconditional flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza and the West Bank. He highlighted the need to reinforce the role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and to implement the reconstruction roadmap adopted at the Extraordinary Arab Summit, under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority and with Arab and international supervision.

Reaffirming Morocco’s longstanding commitment to defending holy sites, particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Head of Government pointed to the work of the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, the executive arm of the Al-Quds Committee. The agency, he said, has been implementing projects on the ground to preserve the legal status of Al-Quds, safeguard its cultural identity, and support the legitimate rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

In a message of solidarity, Akhannouch expressed Morocco’s support for Qatar, Syria, and Lebanon in the face of recent Israeli attacks on their territories.

Looking beyond the Middle East, he also underlined Morocco’s call for peaceful solutions in Libya, Yemen, Sudan, and Somalia, stressing that these must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries concerned and be free from foreign interference.
