Morocco receives new defense system, first batch of ‘Sherpa’ armored vehicles

Morocco has recently received a new anti-aircraft missile system called VL MICA, and the first batch of 4x4 Sherpa light armored vehicles, from France.

According to a media report, Morocco received 36 Sherpa Vehicles and the VL MICA defense system as part of an agreement signed with France in 2020.

The same source added that “the explorer vehicle, developed by the French firm Renault Trucks Defense, is capable of transporting up to 5 crew members and supporting surveillance, reconnaissance, and patrol missions. Additionally, they can be equipped with a remote-controlled weapon station, allowing operators to fire from inside the vehicle, using a joystick and LCD video screen.”

And about The VL MICA air defense missile system, the report said that it is capable of destroying and neutralizing aircraft, ships and other military platforms at short and medium ranges. It can additionally be equipped with a heat-seeking head or active radar to ensure target destruction, even in harsh operating environments.

Morocco has been working since 2015 on an extensive modernization process for its military arsenal. It has signed a number of armament deals with countries such as France, the U.S., Turkey, Israel, and China.
