Morocco Signs $2.9 Billion Deals for 168 New Trains

Morocco’s National Office of Railways (ONCF) has finalized contracts worth 29 billion dirhams ($2.9 billion) for the acquisition of 168 new trains, reinforcing the country’s push to modernize its rail network ahead of 2030.

The procurement plan, carried out under the enlightened vision of King Mohammed VI, aims to replace ONCF’s aging fleet while accommodating rising passenger demand. It also supports major infrastructure projects, including the extension of the high-speed rail line from Kenitra to Marrakech and the development of regional transit services such as an RER-style network in key urban hubs.

Following a year-long competitive dialogue with leading global rail manufacturers, ONCF awarded contracts to three firms offering the most technically and economically advantageous bids. French company Alstom secured the contract for 18 high-speed trains through a consortium with Alstom Railways Maroc. Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) won the contract for 40 intercity trains, while South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem will supply 110 rapid transit trains.

In line with ONCF’s localization strategy, the contracts include industrial offsets, requiring manufacturers to develop domestic rail production capabilities. This initiative is expected to pave the way for Morocco’s emergence as a regional train manufacturing hub with export ambitions.

Additionally, ONCF and its partners will enter into long-term maintenance agreements for the newly acquired trains. The contracts are backed by concessional financing from partner nations, covering the full contract value.

These investments reinforce Morocco’s position as a rail leader in Africa, aligning with the country’s broader sustainable mobility goals. The modernization effort is also set to enhance Morocco’s transport infrastructure as it co-hosts the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
