Morocco's King Inaugurates Two Landmark University Hospitals in Rabat and Agadir

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, inaugurated on Monday the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex in Rabat, a major medical and academic facility designed to provide cutting-edge healthcare and training in medical sciences.

On the same day, the King also ordered the launch of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, a new medical hub set to transform healthcare access and medical education in the Souss-Massa region.

The hospital complex in Rabat, established by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health, marks a new era in Morocco’s healthcare system. Covering 280,000 square metres, it combines a modern hospital with an advanced university for medical and health sciences. The complex aims to provide equitable access to next-generation medical services while serving as a training and research centre for future healthcare professionals.

The Rabat facility includes 30 specialized medical units with a capacity of 600 beds, expandable to 1,000. It houses 24 state-of-the-art operating rooms, 143 intensive care beds, and advanced diagnostic technologies, including Africa’s first PET-MRI system. It also features robotic surgery, oncology, neurosurgery, interventional cardiology, and radiotherapy units.

Among its innovations are a robotic pharmacy, a burn treatment centre, and Morocco’s only hyperbaric oxygen therapy unit. It also includes Africa’s first fully automated laboratory platform for chemical analysis, immunology, and hematology, as well as Morocco’s first fully digital anatomical pathology lab.

The Mohammed VI University of Sciences and Health, integrated within the complex, will host up to 8,000 students across multiple faculties, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and nursing sciences, supported by 15 lecture halls and 72 classrooms.

The entire complex meets the “Exceptional” level of the High Quality Environmental (HQE) certification, with photovoltaic panels covering over 10% of its energy needs and reducing carbon emissions by 40%.

In Agadir, the newly launched Mohammed VI University Hospital Center was built with an investment of 3.1 billion dirhams. The 867-bed facility includes specialized departments in cardiology, radiology, maternal and child care, and emergency medicine.

The Agadir hospital is also the first in Africa to feature the “Revo I” surgical robot, enabling minimally invasive procedures with high precision and 3D visualization. It is equipped with advanced cardiac catheterization rooms, high-resolution imaging systems, and a fully automated pharmacy and sterilization centre.

Designed to serve around three million people, the Agadir hospital is expected to ease access to high-quality healthcare in southern Morocco, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for complex procedures.

Together, the two new hospitals are set to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, contributing to Morocco’s broader goals of expanding healthcare access, fostering medical innovation, and promoting sustainable regional development.
