Morocco is establishing itself as a global leader in energy transition, water-management strategies, and climate diplomacy, said the President of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC), Mahouton Norbert Hounkonnou, on Wednesday in Rabat.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the African Science Academies (AMASA 2025) of the NASAC network, Hounkonnou highlighted that the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, as well as innovations in desalination and investments in hydrogen, are a perfect illustration of Morocco’s visionary policy.
He noted that Morocco is now positioning itself as a true catalyst for scientific leadership in Africa, emphasizing the significance of the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology hosting AMASA 2025 this year.
The Academy’s commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and strategic foresight makes it an indispensable partner in Africa’s collective intellectual renaissance, he said, adding that with its mission grounded in scientific excellence and ethical responsibility, the Academy plays a leading role in bringing together thinkers and policymakers from across the continent.
Taking the floor, InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Co-President Masresha Fetene said, via videoconference, that the institution supports African academies through small grants aimed at strengthening research, public engagement, and science centers in countries such as Cameroon, Benin, Ethiopia, and Ghana.
These initiatives help build the capacities of these academies and empower local scientists to inspire the next generation of African innovators, he added.
African expertise lies at the heart of the IAP’s global network, reflected in the work carried out by its African members who ensure that African perspectives inform international scientific policies and guidelines, he stressed.
Organized by the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, with the participation of about sixty African scientists - including around thirty representatives of African science academies - the event aims to put forward concrete proposals for sustainable, equitable, and science-based development.
