Paraguay Recognizes Morocco’s Sovereignty Over the Sahara, Plans to Open Consulate

Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano announced on Monday in New York that his country recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, confirming Asunción’s intention to open a consulate soon in the Moroccan Sahara.

Speaking to the press following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Ramírez Lezcano stated: “We support Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and intend to open a Paraguayan consulate soon in the region.” He added that this move falls within efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.

The Paraguayan top diplomat also revealed that President Santiago Peña Palacios is expected to pay an official visit to Morocco, noting that he himself will undertake an official trip to the Kingdom before the end of the year.

The meeting between Bourita and his Paraguayan counterpart, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, provided an opportunity to discuss issues of common interest and exchange views on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
