Phosphate: Morocco's trump card to gain support for sensitive issues

Morocco is one of the few countries in the world that has always had good diplomacy, and many historical examples still bear witness to this, but in recent years, Moroccan diplomacy lead by Nacer Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has achieved praiseworthy successes.

Morocco relies on many cards to achieve diplomatic efficiency. The 'phosphate card' remains one of the favorable cards that Morocco uses to achieve success in sensitive issues, such as the Sahara conflict.

According to several observers, Morocco uses phosphate exports as a card to gain the support of many countries in the world in the conflict of the Sahara, and phosphate has contributed to supporting the Moroccan diplomatic moves that succeeded in drawing many votes in favor of Morocco.

Moreover, according to observers, the Moroccan phosphate card appears to be stronger than Algeria's petroleum card, which is doing everything possible to win support for the separatist Polisario Front, which calls for Carving out the Moroccan Sahara in order to establish an independent state in southern Morocco.

The evidence for this talk, according to observers, is that Morocco has gained many supporters in recent years, while Algeria and the Polisario have lost many allies. Moreover, many countries opened their consulates in the Moroccan Sahara cities, and recently the United States recognized the Moroccanness of the Sahara.

This fact was indicated by the local Moroccan press, who said that the OCP Group, which is lead by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mostafa Terrab, and the Chinese group "Hubei Forbon Technology" had signed an agreement to create a joint project in research and development to develop new generation fertilizer solutions and smart agriculture.

This media source says that Morocco's goal in this agreement is to draw China to be one of the countries supporting Morocco in the Sahara conflict, which will be confirmed in the near future.

It seems that the Polisario is well aware of the importance of phosphates to Morocco, so it is trying to pressure some world countries, such as New Zealand, to stop its imports of Moroccan phosphate, claiming that it is extracted from the disputed Sahara. However, New Zealand had a different opinion.

Observers believe that any country has the right to use all the cards to achieve its interests, and it seems that Morocco is among those countries that know how to use its trump cards.
